Verifone Will No Longer Support PC Charge or Payware PC

PC Charge has reached its end of line.

On April 6th, Verifone announced to their partners that they will halt development, sales, and support of their computer-based credit card processing solution PC Charge in stages, beginning immediately and culminating in the coming months.  The mailer sent by Verifone cites the changing payments and security landscapes as some of the reasons for the announcement, as well as their commitment to working on other, more up-to-date payment processing solutions.

Reading between the lines of these statements, PC Charge, a server-based credit card processing middleware, can only be installed on a business’ local server to process credit card and store information on-site.  If ever a hacker compromised a server with PC Charge installed on it, he would have access to the full credit card numbers of anyone whose information had been entered with PC Charge.  For that reason, any business using PC Charge whose server is compromised can be held liable for any losses caused by use of those credit card numbers.

What Does This Mean for Your Business?

If you are a PC Charge user, this means you will no longer receive upgrades or support for your PC Charge product.  As well, your system will remain PCI non-compliant.
